BIOGRAPHY

Shiori Kawamoto, born in Kyoto, is best known for his style of photography that captures female underground idols and young women in the informal setting of their bedrooms. He is one of the pioneers who brought the Japanese underground idol and otaku subculture to attention through his intimate and warm style of scenes that are normally obscured from public view.
By distorting the blurred boundary of “outside” (mainstream / work) and “inside” (niche / home)—which in Japanese culture is usually separated—Kawamoto captures both the person and the room as one scene. This adds an unexpected charm: an invitation to what is traditionally an inaccessible world.

Kawamoto’s career spans three decades, during which he has received several awards. He has held numerous exhibitions, including at Kanazawa 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and in New York, and has published four photobooks of his own work.

He resides in Tokyo continue to capture idols portraits and commercial projects.
